Google has made more small changes to its search results by removing the ‘more results near’ feature in the local search results. The feature gave the searcher the opportunity to view more results in the local area as well as natural and organic results. For example, if a user was to search for pizza in Chelmsford, the search results would display pizza outlets and sellers in Chelmsford as well as addresses, telephone numbers and maps. In addition when Google showed local listings in the organic and natural search results, Google would also display a link that the user could click to show ‘more results near…’ which would display results found directly in Google Maps and Google Local.
Yesterday, this feature had disappeared.
Jade Wang, Community Manager for Google + posted the following comment:
‘We have seen some questions about the small update to local search user interface on Google (removal of ‘More results near…’ link –
Thanks for your feedback about the small update to the local search user interface on Google. This is one of several updates we are working on to improve the local search experience, with the goal of more seamless exploration of places and more integration of local data. Stay tuned for more updates soon.’
The new change comes after several other recent amendments that Google has been reluctant to advertise including related searches filter, previews and cache. It seems as though the search engine giant is making some small regular tweaks to explore the best ways for consumers to find local searches as well as keep results as thorough and detailed as possible. In terms of search engine optimisation, the effect on results is still unknown – after just 24 hours it is hard to tell but if Google continues to make small and unannounced changes it will inevitably have an effect of search engine optimisation listings – detrimental or beneficial.

The infamous file sharing website has been taken down. Try visiting Megaupload.com, the site is no longer up. The FBI made four arrests along with the closure of the file sharing website. Many internet users are shocked by this news as SOPA’s protest was only yesterday in which a huge number of highly trafficked sites closed down in hope of taking down SOPA.
Interestingly enough, the taking down of Megaupload and arrests have caught the attention of international hacktivist group Anonymous. Anon released a message to the public via YouTube to declare the beginning of some sort of cyber-war between the citizens of the United States of America and the Government. Anonymous also urged viewers to share the video via various social media platforms. In retaliation to the FBI’s actions, Anonymous attacked many government sites which resulted in them being offline for some time.
There is a huge amount of protest going on against SOPA and also PIPA as many internet users believe this will censor the internet. Most agree that online piracy needs to be combatted, but this is not an effective method to fix the issue.
This act by the FBI shows that even without SOPA’s approval, they can take any site down and arrest whoever they want, according to Anon anyway. Whether SOPA is passed will be decided in four days, we can only wait and see what will happen to the internet.
If the bill passes it will hugely affect the web in ways that cannot be fathomed. Search engines will be forced to alter their results, which will result in biased results, directly affecting the process and general industry of SEO and PPC.
If SOPA is not approved, it is likely that the US government will find another bill that the citizens of America will be happy about and to deal with online piracy once and for all.

It has been made public as of now that Google are definitely against the SOPA act, and they definitely have just reason to be. Although they are with the SOPA movement, you won’t be sent to a black screen, Google has used their staggering traffic to the best of their ability.
If you log onto Google.com, you will notice at the bottom of the page there is a message from congress which states “Tell congress: Please don’t censor the web”, and by clicking this link, it will take you to another section of Google in which you can sign an online petition to stop SOPA and PIPA, on top of that… information about the two bills are available. More importantly the effects of these bills are explained which is something that is hard to find. Then there is a community section that proves the growing community that are opposing the movements. Internet giants such as Facebook, Twitter, eBay, PayPal and of course Google, not to mention the countless others who are opposing the censorship of the internet.
According to Google, SOPA and PIPA will do more harm than good. This is because it will force internet businesses to closely monitor everything linking to their site and if they are in violation of any new laws according to SOPA and PIPA, then it could potentially mean the end of the business, which will leave a huge number of people jobless.
It would be different if SOPA and PIPA actually worked, according to the big G!, these acts won’t stop online piracy. The regulations written in these bills wont successfully shut down their sites, they will simply transfer them to another domain and continue until they are caught again.
Anyone who works on the internet frequently has had their work stolen and pirated before. Whether you’re a writer or film maker, it happens so often and there is not much we can do about it. We do need a bill or law to prevent online piracy. However we need one that will work and not end up crippling the internet as we know it. This change will have a huge effect on social media and could potentially put a stop to it, not to mention SEO and PPC as the algorithm will be a completely different and most likely biased, and that is if it hasn’t been banned by a government.

Google has not only been engaged in the field of search engines, since it’s success with the battle for search engine supremacy in terms of its share of number of search engine users the search engine giant has since then ventured outside the search engine business. Google has put up several divisions that will take care of these other ventures by the search engine company. Among these ventures entered into by Google is the application for Iphone the igoogle and the development of a handset operating system called android which is also set to conquer the computer operating system field an area where Microsoft is currently reigning supreme.
Recently Google has announced that it has implemented an upgrade to its igoogle and android products. Upgrades for igoogle includes the incorporation of thirty-eight languages (38), it also added the conventional necessities like tabs and quick access to gadgets that were recently used which is hoped to increase speed and usability in the access of the application and other connected applications. The igoogle upgrade will be very accessible to users by visiting the website using the mobile phone and clicking on try on the new igoogle link.

Google is a tough search engine to defeat and it’s executives has been very confident that theirs is the most formidable search engine algorithm. This is backed-up by Googles’ continued supremacy over the internet users share leaving the competitors far behind. The Google era is here and now and it will remain that way for a very long time, or so it seems. Having been always in the number three spot in terms of internet users’ share Microsoft had put it’s efforts time and again in developing the perfect “Google Killer” and with the recent launch of Bing it seems that their efforts are paying off. Microsoft’s Bing for starters showed a strong launching that it even surpassed another search engine pioneer Yahoo who belongs to the number two spot in terms of internet users share. It has also been reported that many SEO’s and online-marketers are contemplating on starting their SEO and their other online marketing campaign using Bing as their base search engine and not Google. With these latest trends favoring Microsoft’s Bing, Google has recently announced that Microsofts’ pet project is really not a threat to the supremacy that Google is currently holding, assailing the reliability and the stability of its search engine algorithm, showing that the search engine giant remains unfazed by the threat posed by Bing.
But unfortunately unfazed is not really an accurate word. Insider reports from the search engine giant stated that its co-founder Sergey Brin have instructed the formation of a team that will take charge in the determination of the differences between Bing’s search engine algorithm with that of Googles’. It has been further reported that this team will be headed personally by Sergey Brin, ending a long time none hands-on participation in the running of the company. This unusual action taken by a Google co-founder is putting doubts on the mind of people of Googles’ invincibility in terms of its search engine algorithm.

During the recent months we have seen the launching of the supposed Google killers. It can also be recalled that Google has maintained its number one position in the field of search engines, raking in more than sixty percent of share of internet users during the month of April. Since it’s inception Google has overtaken the pioneer in search engine Yahoo! and has never looked back since. This continued supremacy of Google in the field of search engine has got several companies thinking and the product of their intensive thinking materialised during the previous months.
In May Stephen Wolframs’ pet project the Wolfram Alpha was launched. Dubbed as a computational knowledge search engine, Wolfram Alpha gives a more definite and exact answer to the entered query, the only drawback is that the Wolfram Alpha search engine being a computational knowledge search engine is only capable of processing exact data which is found within it’s database, thus it is unlike Google that indexes websites Wolfram Alpha only recognises queries that have exact answers.
Microsoft also joined the search engine battle seriously as it upgraded or has created an entirely new search engine that is said to battle Google head on. Microsoft spent more than what is expected as far as advertising is concerned in the hope to outrank the current leaders in the search engine game. The new Microsoft search engine called Bing and recent reviews saw the Microsoft search engine surpassing the second placer in the search engine business Yahoo. Bing combines Microsoft’s familiar features incorporated like “assistants” that helps in guiding you whenever you have the slightest idea on what you are reviewing. Also Microsoft included in their search result from their very own Encarta.
With the emergence of these two contenders for Google’s number one spot one thing is clear, these two search engines do not implement the same search engine algorithm as Google but their capability to surpass Google remains to be seen.

For a Search engine optimisation consultant, company or a practitioner every change in the search engine algorithm is important. The slightest movement in a search engine algorithm will dictate how one’s website will rank in that particular search engine. This is the reason why most SEO companies and SEO consultants are on their toes every time a change in algorithm is announced or observed. Changing search engine algorithm will cause the repositioning of websites in terms of their rankings, but what if there is a drastic change in search engine algorithm? Such as changing the entire search engine? This event happened when Microsoft unveiled their newest search engine that is said to replace the existing Microsoft search engine. Microsoft announced the launching of Bing, a new search engine that is said to take Google head on in terms of battling for the search engine supremacy. This change in algorithm does not only affect internet users but also SEO companies, SEO consultants and SEO practitioners because of the fact that such new search engine may later on become a significant instrument in one’s own SEO campaign.
This is the reason why most SEO companies and SEO consultants have been observing Bing, in order to gain insights on how websites are ranked on its SERP. With only a few days passed after the search engine called Bing was launched it already posted some information that are beneficial to Search engine optimisation in general.
The first aspect that has been observed in order to get a good ranking in Bing is through the use of keyword rich meta data and the second aspect that could aide your SEO campaign is the use of inbound links and the use of keyword rich text in your website content.

Social media networks have emanated from the fact that people are by nature “sociable” beings and this fact was used by companies as a launching pad or an inspiration, if you will, to create and develop the Social media network. A social media network’s purpose is to allow people from all around the globe to interact with each other via a social network community. People can leave messages, comments, share pictures and even locate long lost friends and re-connecting with them, the latter of course with the condition that their friend is also a member, but with an internet phenomenon like the social media networks who isn’t a member?
In the latest report released by Nielsen online in the United States alone the use of Social media networks rose to about eighty-three percent (83%) in April compared to the same month last year. Nielsen online is a survey company that measures web traffic and they found out that most social media network sites have increased in web traffic this year as compared to last year.
Nielsen added that Facebook, a social media network, registered the highest surge in the number of minutes spent by users up to seven hundred percent (700%). This continuing popularity of Facebook has contributed to the 13.9 billion on April this year as compared to its 1.7 billion last year of the same month making Facebook the number one social networking site for the fourth consecutive month.
Myspace came in second by posting a loss from 7.3 Billion user minutes April last year to 4.97 Billion April of this year. Even though posting a loss it still has considerable amount of users over the internet and MySpace is still ranked number one in terms of video streams.
Other social networking sites such as Blogger, Tagged.com and Twitter.com came in third, fourth and fifth place respectively all posting an increase in user minutes.

In times of stringent competition the use of every strategy counts. Integration of different Search engine optimisation tools and other applications that will help one’s own SEO campaign is very much welcome. Google knows how difficult the competition is and in order to give out their contribution to the field of Search engine optimisation Google has released several applications that will aide every internet or online-marketer and or SEO. One such new application introduced by Google is the Search Analysis Dashboard that caters and targets local businesses.
The search analysis works like Google’s analytics with a small twist that is instead of returning results about the visitors in a website it returns results about how visitors came across the website through local listings. To further analyse, take for example website visitor surfing or visiting your website that has an integrated search analysis application, the search analysis application will then determines the local zip code of the user or visitor via the Local business listing. This information about the location of a certain website visitor will greatly aide one’s SEO campaign and online marketing campaign by knowing which part of the local searches should be targeted more and where the online marketing efforts should be focused. This is of course made possible through the Google Local Business Center listings made available to all merchants that are willing to be subjected into Googles’ verification process. The listings are available in thirty-six countries but as of now the Search analysis dashboard is only available within the United States area, which means merchants outside the United States will have to wait for a local version of the search analysis dashboard in their area.
