Here are a few pointers to help you construct the perfect blog post:

Headline: This is the first point of contact for your post; your headline should be attention grabbing as it will be seen and read substantially more than your article itself. If your headline fails to get people’s attention, it is unlikely that they will read your post.

Introduction: Nailing the intro usually sells the article. In general, people who read the first couple of sentences will continue to read the entire article. The intro is your ‘hook’ for the article and is what engages the reader’s attention, so it should briefly summarise the main point of your article.

Language: Most people tend to lower their professional tone (use colloquial language, slang) when writing blog posts as they think that the audience does not want to read a formal/professional blog post- this is not true, especially in SEO. You can talk in a professional tone but just make sure you provide a personal commentary in your post as it is a blog article after all. Also, using emotive language is important in a blog post as emotion shows passion and a human characteristic that is different from the other more rigid and formal articles you may write- emotive language also gains attention.

Text: Break it up. No one wants to read one big block of text or a series of standard paragraphs. Use bullet points, different text formatting (italics, bold), fact boxes, quotation boxes etc. If something looks more interesting, it will most likely interest the audience and make them want to read it.

Other information: At the end of your blog post, you should include a section dedicated to other resources relevant to your article. This can include other general advice, tips and links to further reading/research which will be useful to your blog’s audience.

For bloggers using social media networks know as Google Plus, there is a way, it has been available for a few months, to claim an article as your own. Having authorship of an article has a few benefits.

What’s The Point?

The first and most obvious when seen is that your Google+ photo appears in search results. This is more of a vanity feature but it is a cool one and makes blogging a real form of writing. Very similar to a hard copy book In the way that the author is given a lot of credit for it.

Another benefit is that it makes all content written by an author easier to find, when you find the author icon on a search result then there will be a link for more by that author. So this makes finding content by a specific blogger easier than ever.

One of the biggest points is that it puts your name on your own articles, which means that the problem of having articles stolen is finally combatted. This problem will no doubt continue, but if someone is stealing an article, it is easy to prove who the content really belongs to, which will make it embarrassing to be proved wrong and that you are stealing articles.

How To Do It

Matt Cutts has made a few videos explaining how to add authorship to content and this can be found easily on Youtube. The simpler way is to add HTML code. I will show an example, for your reference “URL” would be the URL of your Google Plus profile. <a href=”URL”?rel=author> +You</a>. The text within the link can say whatever you want but its best to say +”your name” but it really isn’t essential.

According to the instructional videos, the next step is to share the article on your Google + profile, this seems simple enough and if you are an active Google + user you are most likely already doing this.

Conclusion

The benefits of having authorship are definitely worth the effort of inserting a small chunk of HTML code, and if you’re a heavy Google + user then the only thing you will have to do differently is add the HTML code which can be copied and pasted.

Blogging is either for SEO or for the original reason of a blog which is writing for an audience. Regardless to what your reasons for writing are, it is important to come up with good quality, meaningful and useful content regularly. The real difficulty is maintaining a constant flow of content.

Brainstorming is one of the oldest methods around, get a few of your friends or colleagues together and have a discussion about ideas for articles. It is much easier to come up with these kinds of ideas in a group. If your group is having trouble coming up with ideas, have a look at other blogs that are similar, or maybe try Google searching a few of your keywords into the news sections.

Once you have a few topics in mind and written down, try and think of different angles that you could take for that article. For example PPC and why it is…: better for small business, a quicker result compared to SEO and so on. The more angles you can take on one topic, the more blog posts you can get, it must be said that extra care must be taken as you need to mix up the topics; it looks a bit repeated if you keep the same topic and take a different angle straight after the last article.

Having a brainstorm with colleagues is a great way to come up with ideas, not just for blogging but generally. This method is a good method to generate topics in bulk, which means that when you come to writing your next article, you have not got spend half an hour or so thinking of a topic as you have a huge list already.

Adding Keywords

Adding keywords is something a lot of bloggers can struggle with but the correct keywords tend to pop into the article naturally. If you key word stuff your article, it will have a negative effect due to the black hatted techniques. Also the quality of the article will be severely poor.

As long as the topic you are blogging about is related to your industry, you will find the keywords do flow naturally, if for some reason the keywords are not in your article. Just go over the article and find a section where you can add them. One way of doing this is by adding an example where you mention your keywords.

Linking to the Right Page

Once you have keywords in your article, you then need to link to the right pages. Try and link exact keywords to the page you are optimising for them terms, also if you are on Google plus or any other social network, like Twitter, you can link build using your blog for key phrases like a company name, or a key term you want your profile to show up for.
