How To Gather Suitable Keyword Lists Using SEMRush

For those of you who haven’t heard of SEMRush (semrush.com), this industry-renowned SEO tool makes it easy for marketers and web masters to access a great deal of domain-specific information that can be used to enhance their campaign considerably. SEMRush details the kinds of search phrases your audience is using to find you, and you’ll find this data is invaluable if you’re looking to run a campaign that generates a strong return on investment!

NOTE: To access full reports, you may need to sign up for a premium account with the site. Simply click on the ‘Register’ tab on the top left hand side of the interface and browse the registration options available.

To collect a list of the best keywords to use for both your organic and paid search engine optimisation efforts, follow these instructions:

  • Type the domain in question into the search box at the top of the page, and select the regional database you want to use to bring up results. In most cases, you’ll need to opt for ‘Google: UK’.
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select ‘Organic Keywords’. This will bring up a comprehensive report that details all of the keywords that the website ranks for in Google’s top 20 listings.
  • You’ll be able to find out which keywords generate the most traffic to your site (in percentage terms), the position your domain holds for each keyword within Google.co.uk, the number of queries each phrase generates on a monthly basis, and even the average cost-per-click for each keyword in Adwords.

Aside from the obvious paid search benefits, this data can be used to track down keywords with higher search volumes, and it’s these phrases that are most likely to bring more traffic to your site. If you want to organise this data by position in reverse order, simply export the report into an Excel sheet using the handy icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

The ‘Adwords Keywords’ report generated in SEMRush determines all of the search terms currently associated with the website’s Adwords PPC account. You can export this data in a similar way.

Remember, you can carry out these tasks with a view to assessing your competitors’ efforts simply by typing their URL into the search box instead of your own.

If you’re trying to set up an SEO campaign but find yourself stuck for inspiration, you’ll be pleased to know that, once you’ve typed in a keyword into the query box, SEMRush will also bring up a long list of related keywords and all their comparable data. This tool will help you find long-tail keywords if your campaign is currently lacking a broad approach. For example, I’ve typed in ‘umbrellas’ as my starting point and SEMRush has presented me with a list of 1,108 variations on ‘umbrellas’ for me to analyse and consider for my campaign (see screenshot).
