As a continuation from a post just a few weeks ago, “Google’s Ads Aren’t Numbered”, Google has taken a step further with the use of phone numbers. As of 2 weeks ago, AdWords users were no longer permitted to submit ad text that contained a phone number as this would be disapproved.

This morning, I was welcomed into one of our clients’ accounts with this lovely message:

The learn more link forwards you to this page: http://support.google.com/adwordspolicy/answer/176098?hl=en-GB&rd=1 .

However, the section that we should really be interested in is this:Phone numbers and vanity phone numbers can’t be used anywhere in ad text or in a sitelinks extension because doing so is confusing to users who might be expecting to be led to a call session as opposed to a website. To let customers call you directly from your ad, use call extensions instead.”

So we have been warned and we have just a few weeks to implement the required changes, or we must feel the wrath of Google. Understandably, the use of a number in the ad text as well as using a call extension can seem a little pointless, especially from Google’s perspective. Despite the fact that we marketers think it is a brilliant strategy and really emphasises the user to make a call, this is Google’s own way of ensuring quality listings.

Instead of complaining, it’s important to develop a strategy quickly to prepare for another change in the AdWords horizon. The easiest thing to do would be to use the AdWords editor and replace the phone number with “us now” or “today”. Doing this doesn’t really add much to the ad so maybe it could be worth using dynamic keyword insertion to make the ad more relevant in terms of quality score and directly to the user. For arguments sake, let’s say you are a florist in Manchester. Your ad might now say: “Call Now for Manchester Florists”. In my opinion this looks very compelling and relevant, certainly more so than just “Call Us Now”.

We will be preparing for the new implementations by keeping our ads that have a phone number and introducing are newly revised ads, running them side by side. This will allow us to gather data and compare the two different ad formats, along with what substitution performs the best. Then when Google decides to implement these changes we will be fully prepared and won’t have to make any changes to the account.

SEO Positive ‘s new blog has been live for a few days now but I thought it was about time we made the grand tour. The whole site has been redesigned and a few pages have been added, such as social media, whereas PPC, SEO and all of our favourites.

Fitting the site’s redesign, the blog has also been pepped up. We have added practically all of the social buttons and even an author bio for each post. We have also thrown in a really specific categorical system so the article you are searching for will be easier than ever to locate.

One of the best new things about our blog is that we have author sections, so if you are looking for an article from a specific writer here at SEO Positive, then they are easier than ever to locate. You can even get an RSS feed specifically for one author if you would like. Just add /feed to the URL. This can also be done with our main blog so you can get all blog updates sent straight to your email for you to read.

In the United States, we have that glorious—and I wish there were more appropriate ways to express my sarcasm—day after Thanksgiving where the stores open really early and people rush to get their Christmas shopping done. All of these big companies have deals, but the catch is that you’ve got to be there bright and early, typically around 5AM or earlier, to get the deals.

Most people, when they think of Black Friday, regard it as some sort of a “big business” type of day that is meant to get people into the malls and department stores. Stores like Finishline and 6pm can all benefit from this rush because they are big, but what about your small business? How can you, with all the rush of Black Friday, squeeze out business with some well placed discounts?

It all starts with your planning. While Black Friday is only a couple of days away, it will be here again and again year after year. Therefore, planning for it is important because you’re going to want to target the people far in advance.

The first thing you need to do is determine what exactly it is that you want to do. The entire store is 30% off or just certain items? Figure out exactly what it is that you’re going to do to get into the craze of Black Friday because that’ll help you to get things moving.

As a business owner, it’s important to understand the trickery that is Black Friday. The point is to offer such astronomical sales on a few products to get the person into the store. Once they’re in the store, they are more likely to buy something else that might only be partially discounted or not discounted at all. That’s where more of your profit will come from. Therefore, plan accordingly.

Once you’ve got an idea of what you’re going to be offering as your “discount,” the next step is to get it out there to people. You can do this one of two ways. You can try and advertise on the television like so many other companies do, hoping that your Black Friday advertisement will somehow be different than anyone else’s. Or…

You can target the social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook and spread the word that way. A study just came out saying that instead of being connected with six degrees of separation, it’s believed that Facebook makes that more around 4.72 connections away from everyone else. In other words, you can quickly begin to spread the word about your offer and it’ll gain traction.

Create some sort of a story about your great offering with a really catchy title. There’s a reason titles like “$49 iPad” get spread around like wildfire. People would love that and they share it thinking it’ll help them get the cheap iPad. I don’t suggest you use a deceptive title like that, but what I do suggest is that you use a suggestive title that makes people want to share it. If you’re an electronics company and you’re offering 60% off a 47” TV, then make the title something great like: “47” TV for Pennies on the Dollar.”

Finally, all you need to do is enjoy the rush of people coming to your business. However, keep in mind two things. First, Black Friday is only a couple of days away, so you might not get all that much exposure this year. However, next year, you will definitely gain a lot more exposure.

Secondly, think of this Black Friday as a way of gauging interest and building a following. Even if you don’t get many sales from it, you can try other ways of getting into people’s minds such as through email marketing. Don’t be afraid of collecting people’s emails in exchange for another 5% off something because they will, in turn, get your emails about your future Black Friday offerings far in advance to share it with their friends. If you start marketing your offers three weeks before Black Friday, by the time the day comes, you’ll have a ton of people there ready to get started.

Good luck on Black Friday and remember…Even if you don’t do well on Friday, there is always Cyber Monday.

YahooSEOs world wide would have been redirected to the dreaded page of the “site explorer update” In a nutshell, this service is no more and we are going to have to find another place to locate a reliable source of backlinks.

We were all told that Yahoo site explorer was going to be closed down at some point, but it has come to a shock to all SEO’s of the world. Such a massively used and reliable tool is now no more.

Yahoo have said that Yahoo search has been merged with Bings’ Webmaster tools. For many toolbars such as SEO Book, this has caused a massive problem. Beforehand, we had the ease of viewing the amount of backlinks a page had, without even having to open up another browser.

What Is Next?

It is fair to say that Yahoo! Are finished and this site explorer integration to Bing was the last step. SEO’s will have to find a new source of information to base their research on, this will prove to be a difficult task, especially because Yahoo was free and provided excellent results. This could lead to many SEO companies having to go down the route of purchasing software which was once not needed but could now be an essential factor of any SEO business.

The integration into Bings’ Webmaster tools could prove to be a good thing, however this may not completely take off because it may be unable to include into a toolbar like it was for Yahoo site explorer. Fingers cross that there is something that can be done on the situation, because SEO’s will be feeling the burn of an essential tool being snatched away.

Google has waved goodbye to their Lab projects. There are a variety of views and opinions as to why this has happened and it’s understandable that many are taken aback by the decision as it is such huge news. There can however only be one solid reason and after all is said and done, only Google knows why.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, Google Labs is a theme park for adventurous Google users. Google Labs gave its users the opportunity to play around with Google’s ideas and prototypes. Not only do users get a chance to test out these products, but they can also give direct feedback to the engineers of Google. Every feature put into action by Google once came from Google Labs and has been perfected to its current level, for example Google Maps.

PC World stated that the Godzilla of search engines were closing their Lab projects to focus on the development of essential services and products for the future.

“While we’ve learned a huge amount by launching very early prototypes in Labs, we believe that greater focus is crucial if we’re to make the most of the extraordinary opportunities ahead,” Bill Coughram, senior vice president for research and development at Google Inc. wrote in his blog post.

After considering the different possibilities, it is quite clear that this “focus” is going to be heavily concentrated on Google +. As it stands, the only organisation that stands in the way of Google dominating social media is Facebook, so it is understandable why some might say Google is gearing all of its resources towards annihilating Facebook.

Many are and will be sad to see Google Labs go, due to the innovative tools that just won’t be available, but every cloud has a silver lining and there is no doubt that Google will use this to an advantage.
