Recently Google has announced that they have updated their search engine algorithm and such update was focused on the blocking of websites that are utilising the so-called content spams. Content spams have been defined by Google as those contents that are considered of low quality and that it has just been copied from another website. This update has given much concern for the different SEO companies because of the fact that such move affected twelve percent of the search results in the United States alone.

How did this algorithm change come about anyway? Well, it was prior to the update that every website that are returned by Google in its search engine results page may sometimes come from websites providing contents. Websites of low quality have been ranking higher than those websites with original and unique content, the only reason is because websites with these poor contents have much more content for Google to crawl. Prior to the update Google was accused of condoning the proliferation of such low quality content websites because of a speculation that Google was profiting from this websites, this is because of the fact that such websites with generated, copied and low-quality content are bombarded with Google advertisements.

Many SEO consultants believe before that Google’s continuous inaction against content spams are due to the fact that the company is also earning from them. However, this speculation is now dispelled as Matt Cutts, one of Google’s famous speaker, have stated that the search engine giant has made it clear that delivering quality search result is Google’s main priority instead of making quick bucks on advertising from a low-quality website.

Another thought about Google’s move these past few weeks was regarding the incorporation of the Personal Blocklist tool for Google Chrome users. Many SEO companies are adamant with the incorporation of this tool in terms of making search relevant. This is because it is the first time that a user is given the power to control search results by giving the user the power to block specific websites from the search engine results page.

During its first week or release more than seventy thousand users installed it and they have complained that the search results have been 84%changed which a very significant change in the SERP of Google.

Changes have come and go in the field of search engine optimisation however SEO Consultants still remained to be the sought after by many companies because of the increased benefits that they would be able to acquire when they avail of their services, like an increase in the return of investments.

Overstock is the second organization in less than a month to operate a foul of Google with regard to employing frowned-on SEO methods.

Earlier this month, Google was required to get tough together with JC Penney after it was says the retailer got gamed Google’s algorithm to synthetically boost its google search engine results page ranking. Soon after the actual ploy was revealed, JC Penney found that in certain research categories where that had previously made an appearance as the top end result, it was now shown several pages even farther back –so far back the seventh web page in some instances. Now, it would appear that Google has routed another company and punishing it for influencing its search result ranks.

Overstock, a web-based discount product or service retailer, previously seemed as a top end result for a number of search inquiries, including “vacuum cleaners” and “laptop computer systems,” However earlier this week, it turned outand was discovered that many of those hyperlinks had slipped again several pages throughout Google’s search results – interacting a big blow for Overstock’s visibility on the world’s premier search engine.

According to Overstock, the links slipped following the company employed the search engines optimization (SEO) method to help boost it’s search ranking. The company states it encourage universites and colleges, which typically have a great “.edu” domain name, to post hyperlinks to Overstock pages, in substitution for product discounts for college students and faculty.

Yahoo and google reportedly gives more importance to “.edu” websites as compared to “.com” websites when producing its search result ranks. Therefore, a commercial internet site like Overstock can see their search ranking climb each time a highly regarded academic website links to it.

“Google has produced clear they believe these kinds of links should not aspect or penetrate into their search formula,” said Patrick Byrne, Overstock’s leader, in a statement for the Wall Street Log. “We understand Google’s position and our company made the appropriate adjustments to remain within Google’s recommendations.”

Overstock said it stopped encouraging academic institutions to create links to it’s pages on February 15, but some websites could be slow to take straight down the links. Google has not yet offered any comment on the said situation.

The road to a good ranking in Google and other Search engines is considered to be a very rough road as one must tackle several stages in the development of the website. These three stages are Web Development stage, SEO/content development stage and the Link Building Stage.

The third stage is of course necessary in order to establish a websites’ reputation and it can only be possible by building links to a website, this is because of the fact that every site linking to your target website is considered to be a vote to that target website. It is therefore necessary to acquire links to your target website, however there are several aspects that SEO companies should understand about link building and these are the following:

1. The process of link building does not happen overnight, if you want to gain high quality links then you have to be patient in building your links. Be choosy on who will be linking to your website as it may also affect your ranking, remember linking to bad neighborhood may besmirched your online reputation.

2.  Link building needs every SEO consultant’s attention. Many SEO companies consider link building as a process that could take the backseat in their campaign however it should be a process that is supposed to be up there with other basic SEO processes. This is because of the fact that it would take time before the site will gain or before the link building efforts are going to be realised.

3.  Always document your link building efforts. Link building is a process where there are no known metrics and because it is focused on gaining links from various sources that may number even up to hundreds of thousands documenting each would give you the metrics that you need to put value on your link building effort. Further, this documentation would also give you the needed information on knowing which sites are giving you the boost in terms of your site’s reputation.

For SEO companies understanding these link building facts would greatly increase their link building plan for their future websites.

This tutorial will show you how to create a read more / read less content area. This is ideal for use with hidden content or FAQs for instance.

First you need jquery installed on your page, you can use the following link for this: http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.2/jquery.min.js

Now create a new javascript file and insert the following code:

$(document).ready(function(){
$('#homeReadMo').slideUp( );
$('a.homeReadMo').click( function(){
if( document.getElementById( 'homeReadMo' ).offsetHeight > 0 ) {
$( '#homeReadMo' ).slideUp( 'fast' );
}
else{
$( '#homeReadMo' ).slideDown( 'fast' );
}
return false;
});
});

This code basically looks for the element with id=homeReadMo and contracts or hides the area on page load. The code also allows any element with the class of homeReadMo, when clicked, to expand or open the id=homeReadMo content.

The if statement within the second function finds whether the size of the hidden content if greater than 0 (ie: whether it is hidden already). If it is hidden then the function will expand and if it is not hidden it will contract.

You can then add the following code to the html for your elements:

With this setup you could even add more code to the javascript to change the read more text to read less when clicked, as follows:

$(document).ready(function(){
$('#homeReadMo').slideUp( );
$('a.homeReadMo').click( function(){
if( document.getElementById( 'homeReadMo' ).offsetHeight > 0 ) {
$( this ).html( 'read more' );
$( '#homeReadMo' ).slideUp( 'fast' );
}
else{
$(this).html('read less');
$( '#homeReadMo' ).slideDown( 'fast' );
}
return false;
});
});

Google is the primary search engine where most SEO companies are gearing their SEO campaign. This means that since Google is a household name and it is the most popular choice by many internet users many of those SEO consultants are focusing the SEO efforts towards making their target website optimised according to Google’s algorithm.

However, because of the fact that Google’s algorithm is a best kept secret and due to the numerous number of people trying to scam others into believing that their system would work in making their site appear in the first page of Google by utilising black hat techniques would make their website to be prone to being banned by Google. In a recent YouTube video launched by Matt Cutts (who is popularly known as one of Google’s spokesperson) he gave several tips on how to lift the ban implemented by Google on your site.

In his video Matt first defined the difference between an algorithmic and a manual penalty where the latter pertains to the action being taken by Google on sites reported to them, while the other is a ban emanating from the discovery of the algorithm about the sites’ violation of Google’s ranking factors.

For an algorithmic ban the penalty can easily be lifted if you remove the different aspects of site that have caused the ban in the first place. Lifting the ban is fairly easy just change your website following standards set by Google, using the webmaster tool may help guide you in this endeavour.

For those that were manually banned, these manual flags are called “time-outs” which are being implemented for a certain length of time based on the gravity of the offense committed. Since this is time bounded which means that there is a definite time for it to lapse then once that time has expired your site will again move up in rankings. Should you want to expedite the lifting of a manual penalty you can file a request for reconsideration addressed to Google.

Every SEO consultant is focused on making their target website gain the goal for their SEO campaign as far as that target website is concerned. Many SEO companies however are sometimes implementing their SEO Campaign months if not years after the website was launched.

The problem for this is that Google already started to crawl the website once it is live and online. This is why those SEO consultants who were just hired to conduct search engine optimisation efforts on the website should first know the current state of the website based on its SEO health.

Diagnosing the Health of a website SEO-wise is fairly easy. An SEO company would just need to identify the current state of the different ranking factors and indicators of the said website. The first factor that could easily be checked is the current page ranking of a website. Page ranking is considered as an indicator of a website’s reputation. This because of the fact that page ranking considers the number of sites linking to your website taking into consideration also the quality of the link by determining the page rank of the site linking to you.

Second indicator is the cache status of the target website, if Google is regularly cache the target website then it is on the right track however if the caching is not up-to-date then this could be an indicator that the website was flagged and the site may have some problem in terms of being crawled by the search engine bots.

Third indicator is the total number of links going outside of the target website or commonly known as outbound links. If your site have more outbound links then your site will get lesser amount of link popularity as it is being distributed to the sites you are linking to.

Fourth is the age of your website, Google and other search engines favour websites that are existing for a long period of time rather than those that have just been made live.

SEO consultants should always look for these indicators of a website’s SEO health prior to taking on planning their search engine optimisation approach.

This tutorial will show how to make an image float in the corner of a website, for instance, to highlight a feature or button, like that shown below.

First create your corner image and it’s best to create the image as a transparent png so that it can float on top of the page on a low res screen without looking odd (unless it is a solid image anyway).

Now open your css file and you will need the following css for your image.

#float-image {
position: absolute;
top: 0;
right: 0;
width: 114px;
height: 118px;
background: url(images/misc/image-name.png) no-repeat;
display: block;
}

This code will make whatever you set as id=float-image to be position absolute on the page to the top right corner, you may also need a z-index of say 100 encase the image floats below any other divs.

If you want the image to constantly be fixed at the top right corner even when scrolling then simply change position: absolute to position: fixed.

To date, Google remains unwilling to directly block or demote content farms for example AOL’s Yahoo’s Associated Content and Demand Media’s eHow, which push out cheaply-produced articles intended mainly to appease Google’s search algorithms. Fortunately it’s giving the power to users to ban such content by using a Chrome extension called the Personal Blocklist.

Personal Blocklist enables you to block entire web domains from Google searches. You aren’t technically restricted to content farms, either; current debts bar an internet site to appear alongside every google listing.

Google isn’t hiding the fact that they are utilising crow sourced research method, the effect of which is that if you utilise the extension and block an internet site, Google collects that information, and “will study the resulting feedback and explore with it being a potential ranking signal for your search results.” Put simply, if enough people block Associated Content or eHow, Google may lower the Page Ranks from the domains.

It’s really a big step for Google, a company known to be usually quite secretive about how exactly or precisely it treats individual websites. Essentially, the organization is asking power users to help exercise their right to identify which web sites should be demoted in PageRank. What could be dangerous with regards to this new feature, according to some SEO consultants, is that impartiality may not be exhibited especially considering the fact that Google will base its demotion by “listening” to one side of the story.

This may be a publicity move. Although Google insists its serps are usually less spammy than they were once, the company enterprise has brought some heat lately rising of content farms. Google remains quite vocal in defending its search quality (and questioning the integrity of rival Bing), and releasing the extension is a second method of show it’s being proactive. Google certainly does not want the perception among tech enthusiasts that the search is broken, because that can only cause more competition and disruption.

The search engine giant, Google recently caught and cracked down onwhat is arguably one of the greatest attempts at deviously manipulating a company’s search engine ranking. While stories similar to this aren’t uncommon when it comes to spam tactics from, certain dubious web games and so on, the accused party behind this scam might surprise you: It’s retail giant J.C. Penney.

Based on an up to date New York City Times article, suspicions were raised when it had been revealed that J.C. Penney was the superior result to get a wide array of searches that most people wouldn’t necessarily associate with the company (examples include “dresses”, “bedding”, and “area rugs”). The Times asked online search expert Doug Pierce of Blue Fountain Media to help them figure out how this might be, and also the man’s answer was enough to upset Google it had been forwarded tothe company.

Pierce found out that, when he searched for “dresses”, there have been over 2,000 sites listed that referenced dresses. However, a number of these sites had not do dresses, but they included text links to J.C. Penney. In reality, a number of these sites were only link farms.

The Times contacted Google on this information and ended upin an interview with Matt Cutts, the head of Google’s webspam team. Cutts clearly wasn’t happy around the issue, that wasa clear violation of Google’s advertising terms. Cutts also mentioned that jcpenney.com had previously violated Google’s guidelines 3x in the past (the newest was in November).

J.C. Penney, needless to say, isn’t happy concerning this. The retail chain fired SearchDex, itssearch engine consulting firm. A spokeswoman for the company denied any wrongdoing inside matter, plus the company issued this statement following Google’s response: “We are disappointed that Google has reduced our rankings for that reason, but i will always work actively to retain our high natural search position.”

That is a very public black eye for J.C. Penney, but many cannot exactly bring themselves to feel sorry for the company when it had been pretty obvious it’s taken part in something so shady. This event should come as warning to SEO companies that utilising black hat techniques such as link farms should not be patronised.

For SEO companies, establishing a websites’ reputation is vital, the reason being with the fact that a website having a high reputation is prioritised by many internet users. With the entire internet world being open to various kinds of websites discerning the trustworthiness of the site is often a quite boring process. For this reason Google have developed the page ranking system.

The page ranking system is a way of measuring the net pages’ value based on the presence in the quantity and quality of links both incoming and outgoing. Page ranking would view the links both incoming and outgoing as a “vote” for the web site. The page ranking is computed utilizing a sophisticated formula and vote-tallying mechanism. The page ranking of a website is awarded by Google with the scale derived from one toten (1 to 10). The page ranking scale is not a linear scale in which the distinction between rank 3 and 4 is lesser compared to the difference on rank 4 and 5. Google initially is claimed to get favoured usually websites that have an increased google page rank, this is why many SEO consultants are getting obsessed with link building processes and or strategies.

However, prudent SEO consultants are aware that although linking to your website and also using a page ranking is vital there isn’t any basis for someone to be enthusiastic about building links. Obsession to linking would sometimes lead an SEO consultant or a search engine optimization company to turn to some black hat techniques which rather than helping inside the increase in the page ranking or even the search engine page ranking would even be detrimental to the desired output in the backlink building campaign.

According to Google although page ranking is really away of determining or establishing the trustworthiness of your website or web site there are Google’s page rank just isn’t an absolute solution. This is because of the fact that a higher google page rank doesn’t guarantee a top Google search engine results page ranking. Second Google’s optimization algorithm is not entirely based on one way links. This is the reason why prudent SEO companies would treat chasing page ranking as a hobby and not really an absolute SEO strategy.
