The recent release of Google Instant Preview has been welcomed by a lot of search engine users but has caused concerns to some SEO consultants and SEO companies. Just like when Google Instant was released a lot of SEO Companies and SEO consultants have been worrying about their websites’ search engine results page ranking mainly due to the fact that along with the rolling out of the new feature comes the integration or update in the search engine algorithm which is a factor that no SEO company nor SEO Consultant can control. The release of the new Google feature, the Google Instant preview, has once again sparked the interests of SEO companies and SEO consultants to research on its effect on their SEO Campaign.

As a result of their interest they have found one adverse effect of the Google instant preview to the data or results being displayed or returned by Google Analytics. Google Analytics is a tool that many SEO companies and SEO consultants to track the traffic or visits that their website is getting including the sources among others. It was noticed by SEO Companies and SEO consultants that Google Instant preview appears to be fetching the webpage dynamically when the Google Instant preview is activated and which thus would mean in simple terms that if a search engine user would preview your site in Google’s search engine result page it would count as a visit to your website even though the user did not actually visit your website. This in effect would distort your data imagine one hundred users previewing your website in Google without actually visiting it.

To answer this problem Google Analytics Team member Trevor Claiborne have announced that they were able to solve  this issue and that “visits” from Google Instant Preview will no longer be shown in the SEO company’s or SEO consultants Google analytics account. However, distorted data that previously have been shown in their Analytics account will not be reprocessed and would remain as is.

Every optimisation counts, that is the principle that should be integrated when implementing as well as when planning your next SEO campaign. Many SEO companies and SEO consultants are focusing on their standard approach in search engine optimisation which could give disastrous effects. This is because of the fact that there is no single solution in search engine optimisation there are several strategies and techniques that are supposed to be implemented prior to the success of such endeavor. Worst thing about SEO is that you do not have an exact gauge or meter in order to know whether or not the search engine optimisation strategies implemented were contributing to the overall SEO effort or SEO campaign. It is however important to note that although strategies are not constant or does not have gauges or standards which cannot be measured there are some strategies that are considered to be common search engine optimisation methods. Among these common SEO methods is the process of optimising the images that are integrated with the website. The different elements or tags that are utilised to insert the different images has the ability to carry with it different keywords through its “alt” attribute.

However it order to fully optimise the different images in your website it is imperative that the following guidelines must be followed:

1.       Use descriptive texts as filenames for your images, image filenames can have a great effect on the optimisation of your website therefore you have to rename the filename of your images according to its description.

2.       Use descriptive text in your image tags’ “alt” attribute, as stated above the alt attribute of the image tag can contain phrases or keywords therefore it is imperative to utilise this attribute to insert descriptive keywords taking into consideration the fact that the descriptive text must be concise and relevant.

It was not too long ago that many SEO companies and SEO consultants have been buzzing about Google’s release of their product Google instant. This ambitious project was finally implemented and have initially caused concerns to a lot of SEO Companies and SEO consultants due to obvious updates in Google’s search engine algorithm. However, after several days of researching and observing Google instant it has been proven that there are no cause or reasons for SEO companies and SEO consultants to be alarmed about the possible change in the search engine results page ranking of their websites.

At present however, another update to Google’s search engine algorithm has been giving SEO companies and SEO consultants a reason to test their SEO campaign’s preparedness as the search engine giant rolls out its Google instant preview. Google instant preview is a feature add on to Google instant where users of the search engine could activate such feature whose function is to display a screenshot of the website where you have your mouse cursor over. True to its name it gives you a preview of the websites’ general appearance and thus giving you a choice whether such websites is the one that you are looking for. The Google Instant preview can be activated by clicking on the magnifying Glass icon beside the link on the search engine results page.

The Google Instant preview would indeed increase the quality of user experience as Google users can now see a preview of the websites prior to actually visiting the website. Further this will give users knowledge or idea on what to expect prior to actually clicking the link. For SEO companies and SEO Consultants it would mean that they would have to redesign their website in such a way that their website’s screenshot appearance in Google instant preview would easily convince the user to click on the link and visit the target website.

All developers have to transfer sites at some point, if you don’t I envy you. It seems that site transfers always have teething issues with the difference in server builds, operating systems having different compilations of PHP and the rest.

And worst of all, different hosts limitations…

But to transfer a site you need to make a simple list of things that need to be done in order for it to work.

  • Get all files, including hidden files (many a time I’ve been caught up on the .htaccess on a mac being hidden and a site riddled with 404 errors…)
  • Get all database details of the new server
  • Update all calls to databases
  • Use Dream Weaver (for the only things its any good for) to search and replace across the site for the old URL and change it to the new one, and the same with database details)
  • Make sure image, stylesheet, javascript and any other call is base root not an absolute URL (unless externally hosted)
  • Upload everything, including creating the new databases
  • Test everything, fix bugs and teething issues

If you can do all of the above your site will transfer easy peasy.

According to many SEO companies and SEO consultants the steps to an ethical SEO campaign is divided in to four steps generally. The first would be keyword research, second, content development, third web development and fourth link building. These are considered by many search engine optimisation companies and consultants to be the general template for developing the website as well as its promotion. These steps are under the category of white hat SEO and that they might seem to be very easy to do but are in fact very difficult to accomplish. It is therefore important for every SEO company and SEO consultants to understand what are the different steps included in these general categories in order to implement the details of the search engine optimisation campaign correctly.

The first category or step is keyword research, it is a known fact that the keywords which will be utilised on your website will form the corner stone of your entire SEO campaign. It is therefore just right for an SEO campaign to start by researching which keywords would be useful. At this stage SEO companies and SEO consultants will conduct some computation and statistics in order to determine which keywords would help generate a large volume of traffic with less competition. Keyword research also entails researching for the keywords being utilised by your competitors, especially your competitors who are already on the top spot of the search engine.

The second category is content development, at this stage you will already draft your websites’ design and content. The development of the website and its content should incorporate your suggestions and ideas in order to deliver your desired output without of course compromising the marketing plans or designs for your website. Content development includes the incorporation or choosing images for the website as well as developing content for the website and further the design of your navigation structure for the website which is a very important element.

Following the conventional way of SEO and using only White hat techniques you can expect that your websites’ ranking will skyrocket to page one.

The lifetime of an application or an endeavour for a technology company could last from several days to several months or even several years. Some of the short-lived hypes that were launched by Google lasted for several years and most of them are still being utilised up to this day. One of Google’s most talked about application or project was the Google Wave. The Google wave was the latest hype in 2009 and was dubbed as the email killer, however events that happened after the launch of Google wave contributed to the closing of the project. One main factor was that there was a failure in Google’s realtime communication tool which was a big factor in Google Wave. Since then Google has shut the project down and has made it open sourced and repackaged as Google Wave in a Box. With the shutting down of the project many people have already marked the end of the project, however recent events have made Google wave to resurface following a new proposal that was developed by the Apache Software Foundation.

The Apache Software Foundation is hosting several open source projects and they are hoping to add the development of the Google Wave into their portfolio. Under the new proposal Google Wave will be restructured and migrated into the Apache Software foundation structure, this is to make the Google Wave return to it’s state of development but with the hope of integrating the developer community of Apache into the mix thus getting more committers to the project. This proposal also noted the risk of adopting the Google Wave project due to the fact that such project has never taken off the ground when it was still with Google, but proponents of the proposal are hopeful because of the fact that Wave’s use by the U.S. Navy as well as by other adopters would make it a project worth developing.

Learning the ropes of website promotion and website design is fairly easy is you know where to start, and learning is important because the client or you being the client is still part of the decision making process otherwise your website might not come out to be the one that you’d expect.

It is important then that you learn how to start your website as your opinion, suggestion and requirements will be highly valuable in the development of your site. It is important that you as the client participate actively in this stage of your website development because of the fact that it will determine everything from design to content of your website. Keyword research would also enter this stage of website development and what you have to consider when looking for the most appropriate and viable keyword is to determine the total monthly searches of such keyword and the corresponding competiton the ideal ratio would be high volume of search and low competition.

Second is to determine and register your domain name. If you would focus mainly on branding you can integrate fully your company name, however if you would like to focus both SEO and branding-wise you have to integrate at least one keyword in your domain name and such should be your primary keywords. Keywords must also be easily recognised and memorised by people in order to achieve loyal visitors in your website.

Finally you have to be present or at least be informed on how your site was installed or set-up in order to enable you to know how to repair your website in case  nobody will be available to help you out.

This tutorial will show you how to create a shadow background effect in Photoshop that can be used for subtle effects on images or menus for instance.

First open a new document and create a new layer, now select the Rectangular Marquee Tool and draw your desired shape onto the canvas and then fill the selection with the same colour as your background, in case it is #ffffff.

Now copy the layer, click on the bottom of the two layers and hit CTRL + U, drag the Lightness option all the way to -100 and press OK to make the new layer a solid black. Now go to Filter > Blur > Gausssian Blur and enter a radius of around 2 – 3 pixels and press OK.

You should now have a standard shadowed background like the one shown below.

Now click CTRL + T and rotate the shadow layer slightly to the left. Finally just reduce the opacity to suit, say around 25% and you are done. You can also simply erase any of the shadow corners to get your desired effect

Black hat SEO is considered to be one of the “dishonest” way of acquiring links, content and ultimately a high ranking. Although high ranking may be achieved through black hat SEO such ranking is not stable that is there is a huge possibility that the target website that was implemented with Black hat techniques would have its ranking go down in short period of time. This is the reason why it is imperative or important that white hat techniques be implemented in order to have the search engine recognise the target website to be an honest site and a reputable website. There are times however that any SEO company and SEO consultant would accidentally dwell or utilise black hat techniques which can be attributed with the fact that they are misinformed or uninformed on the nature of such SEO technique that they are using this can further be attributed with the fact that the nature of an SEO technique could vary or change depending on whether or not such technique is being abused to give undue advantage. This is why it is important for an SEO company or SEO consultant to be informed of the different techniques that may be considered as black hat SEO in order to avoid, prevent or even remedy a website that was suspended because of the implementation of such. The following are some Black hat SEO techniques:

1.       Use of Automation Tool in Link Building – search the internet for any SEO automation tool especially those that would automatically submit information to different sites in order to gain backlinks and you will find out that there are lots of such tools. These tools would enable one to thousand of links in just one click, building link at that rate is considered as unnatural therefore search engines consider such as spams.

2.       Disguising your website – another black hat SEO is disguising the link of your site to be going to a specific page while in fact showing a different page. Wherein one page is fully optimised but not designed properly and such page is only for search engine crawlers while the other one is a page that is not fully optimised but it is developed aesthetically and thus well presented worthy for a user to look at, this process of deceiving the search engine is called cloaking.

These two black hat techniques should always be avoided however tempting they may be.
