When you hear the word Search Engine Optimisation, a very popular term comes in your mind and that is Page Rank. I know other SEO friends who are always looking up their page rank especially when Google updates it. I can see frustration when their page rank decreases and excitement when their page rank increases. But then the question is does page rank still matter?

First let us define what Page Rank is? A Page Rank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web. There are many tools to determine Page Rank. Number one tool is the Google Page Rank Tool; usually the Page Rank depends on how many relevant links are pointing to our website. The more relevant link you have the higher chance that you will get a good Page Rank. It has been said that Google updates Page Rank every three months, I just don’t know if this is true, but based in experienced I can see good Page Rank updates every two to three months.

Some SEO specialists are really obsessed when it comes to Page Rank; they tend to build too much link just to get high page rank. And even feel paranoid when their Page Rank goes down. But honestly for me, Page Rank is indeed still important but not as important as Search Engine Results Page or SERPs. You can use a good Page Rank in exchanging links or maybe when the time comes that you want to sell your website. A good Page Rank can also be a good way in marketing yourself as a SEO. As this is one way to prove that you know how to do link building well to your website. When you have a good Page Rank it only means that you have good set of relevant back links to your site and as we all know, link building is one of the most important things when it comes to SEO.

But we must not forget that there are other more important things to consider like Search Engine Results, which is for me is more important than anything else because this is what SEO is all about. Almost all SEO specialists want and are aiming for good ranking in the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN. As much as we want to focus on Page Rank, it is also essential that we do not forget our rankings on search engines.

Some people say that Page Rank is not anymore important and not a big deal at all. But based on my experience, I still consider Page Rank important as I can use it when I do link exchange and I can evaluate how good I am doing when it comes to link building as much as I can evaluate how relevant are the links I’m getting. But then I never forget to consider other things when it comes to SEO. Like content creation and other good on page and off page optimisation which will not only give me a good Page Rank but can make my website rank in major search engines.

So for the question if Page Rank is still important, for me yes it is but there are other more important things to be considered and more important like SERPs. But point of views when it comes to Page Rank is different and can vary.

Forum Signatures

Getting Forum Links is very easy, and quick, however this alone will not help you rank for many keywords unless you are targeting something like “Pink Left Handed Widget” however it is still a great source of links to go with the other links that you choose to build within your link building campaign.

To make forum signature links you are best to find forums related to your website theme, and sign up as a member. Put your homepage, or a hubpage on your website as the signature link, and put your targeted keyword down as the anchor text “your name” and every post that you make on that forum will give you a backlink.

When looking for a forum to post your link on be sure to find out if the links on that forum are dofollow or nofollow. No follow are not as good for SEO purposes and the others as they do not pass any benefit on, however it is still worth posting to those as someone in the foum may find what you post useful, and then link back to your site from theirs.

When posting in forums don’t just spam the forum, you must ensure that you become part of the community, get to know the other regular posters in the forum, and link to their website too, they may link back to you later.

Reciprocal Links / Link Exchange

An easy, and very effective way to gain relevant links is to swap links with other relevant sites that are in or related to your industry.

First of all you should start with people that you know, friends, family, people that you do business with, see if they will all link to you if you link back to them in return. Those are the quickest types of links, and they are free. Once you have exhausted all of your contacts that can pass you a good link, then you need to move on to other people in your industry. The good thing about link exchange is that most of your competitors will want to swap links with you as it does them just as much good as it does you.

You don’t just have toswap links with competitors in your country, contact website owners that are in your industry who are in other countries too, these contact will be even more likely to swap with you than your more local competitors, as most of the time you will not be appealing to the same audience as someone from another country.

Top Tip:

Add an automtic link exchange form on to your links page so that anyone can swap links with you without having to contact you first. Studies show that sites with automated link exchange script in place increases the amount of link exchanges you would receive by over 70%, so it is worth doing.

Increase your link building by adding an automated link exchange script to your website.

Use An SEO Company

This is an obvious one, but it is also the quickest, and in most cases also the cheapest ways of building links. I know it is the fastest way to get lots of good quality inbound links to your website.

A good SEO company should have access to dozens if not hundreds of websites that they can place your link on. If the SEO company are any good, they will be able to ensure that all the links that they place pointing to your site are links related to the theme or topic of your website, this way each link will be given more strength, and in turn help push your website further up the rankings for your related keywords.

SEO Positive are an experienced link building company, and can give you further information on building links.

Submit To Free Directories

This one is an oldie, but still works great with other forms of link building.

Submitting you website to free directories will generate a small and steady stream of traffic to your site, and will also generate effective SEO friendly one way links to your website. There are many lists of free directories on the internet that you can use for free if you fancy submitting your website yourself, however as there are many free directories, and not all of them are SEO riendly it would be more beneficial for you to use a directory submission service.

One service that is highly popular is this is one of the oldest lists and still one of the most up to date and trustworthy lists of free directories. You may download the list and submit your site yourself or you can pay for a submission service for your website.

SEO Positive also have our own list of free directories, some of which we own ourselves, and are highly ranked in the natural search engines which we will submit your site to. For a free quaote, or for more information call one of our sales staff.

Googles own directory dmoz is by far the most popular, and most powerful directory on the internet, however it may take between 3 months to a few years to get your site listed in Dmoz unless you know an editor (who usually charge you to put your site into the directory) Be careful, as some people claim to be editors of Dmoz, but are not!

If you have a free diectory that you would like SEO Positive to add to our list, then contact our directory editor.

Write Articles

An old, but very effective, and virtually free way to gain great links is by writing articles. There are a few ways in which you may gain links from writing articles back to your website.

First of all, write an article that is between 500 – 800 words long is recommended, as some sites do not accept articles if they are less than 500 words, some request a minimum of 700 words. The article must be topic specific to your website for this to have any real gain to your link building campaign. It also has to be an interesting article, an article that is useful, and that people will find not only easy to read, but also to understand. You need to understand your audience.

Once you have your spectacular article that you want everyone to read, and click through to your site to find out more information about you, your services, and / or your products you need to decide where to publish your article. This is where you now have some choices.

Submit to An Article Website

This is usually where people will submit their articles to, as they are usually seen as authorative sites with high page rank, and many readers. They will also help your site rank highly in the natural search engines. The link that you provide on the article will pass any page rank gained onto your site, which in turn will help your rankings.

Another good thing about submitting your article to an article submission site is that usually you will find that people will take the content of your article an put it on their site as helpful information for their visitors, however most article sites ensure that any content that is copied has to keep the link back to the author (you) in it (so you gain another backlink for ding nothing). Thats why its vital that you write a good article. The better the information, the more times your article will get copied.

Sell or Give Your Article Away

Blog owners will always be interested in unique content as long as it is topical to their blog, and so long as it is well written. By adding the content that you write to their site, they too should link back to your site stating that you were the original author of the information. However you can make an agreement with the blog owner, if they dont want to say that you are the author. They can claim to be the author if they put a link to you in their blogroll (this usually means that you get a sitewide link from their blog, and could add up to hundreds if not htousands of links comming in to you).

This is a subject that is very often discussed in the “search” industry, and my answer is always the same.

“Pay per click marketing is great for immediate traffic to your site, however it is very expensive over a period of time”.

“Search engine optimisation is a long term plan as it takes longer to start to get results, however it works out cheaper in the long term, easier to manage if you employ an SEO agency to do the work for you, and great investment into your website”.

My Answer:

“Use both, if you want to increase traffic from day one, but over time be cost effective, start with PPC while you are working on the optimisation of your site, and when you start to gain position from natural search engine optimisation campaign you can dop the pay per click campaign”

The real answer to this question is: It depends on the website, and the site owners needs at the time.

This is because it may take months, or even years to gain position for your website in the natural results if you are in a difficult industry, or you have a low budget to work with, so in this case PPC may be the best option. However if it is a long term investment, or a small sideline project, search engine optimisation will be best rather than pay per click.

Which ever way you decide to promote your site, be sure to first take a thoughtful approach, then seek advice from an experienced, and reputable SEO company that are able to help you further.

Have you noticed it yet?

Looks like Google is getting into the Christmas spirit this year by adding little Christmas icons next to their Sponsored results when you type in almost anything to do with Christmas.

So far 3 different symbols have been spotted. The one pictured here, Christmas Trees, and A Star.

Now is this as simple as Google getting into the Christmas spirit? Or are they playing a clever marketing game to make their sponsored results stand out more? Even if it is only for a short festive period, Google makes billions out of AdSense Clicks from their own listings.

Have you spotted another type of icon? Let SEO Positive know.
